From Photo, to Print

Subsidy Granted

CBK Rotterdam granted me with a Research and Impulse subsidy for my project From photo, to Print. This means that I am able to do research into analogue photography, developing techniques, and darkroom printing.

As a Rotterdam visual artist, I have always had a great focus on the manual process within my art practice. From creating masks and sets to make-up and prop making, every part of my work is made by hand. This approach allows me to precisely control and refine every detail, giving my work a unique, personal signature.

My artistic question for this project is: “How can I further deepen and expand my existing practice by gaining full control over the photographic process, from recording to print?” The objective is to renew my art practice by fully mastering the techniques of analog photography and developing my own prints. This will allow me to not only produce the imagery that documents my works, but also to integrate these images as an autonomous part of my artwork.

The project involves the commissioning of an old darkroom space that I took over from Robert den Hartog. Here I want to educate myself in the techniques of analog photography and developing my own prints. During this period I will focus entirely on learning the entire process, from taking photos with an analogue camera to developing the negatives and printing the photos in my own darkroom. The technique of analog working offers a new dimension and depth of control and manual work that fits seamlessly with my existing artistic working method.
